LOVE PARTHENIS’ AND THIS PARTICULAR WORK IS NO EXCEPTION
Bonhams are doing an excellent job for Greek art and twice a year offer top Greek art for a hungry clientele of investors, collectors and museums. This year’s November sale in Paris is another great effort to bring to auction art of mention and of importance to the general public.
We focus on the work of Parthenis, lot number 4, which looks great, of the artist and with some important history to it. Parthenis is the top 20th century Greek artist who left behind a great art legacy and many student artists to continue the work he left behind upon his passing away in 1967.
There is a cloud about many works of the artist, as he has been copied a lot. The present work looks great, belongs to the genre of the artist and even though unsigned there is no doubt it is by the master. Parthenis left many works of his unsigned and apparently he signed them only when he sold them.
In this work the religious and mystical content is prominent and soft colours dominate the canvas. As normal and in many cases with his canvases Parthenis used the reverse side of the canvas to paint, which also allowed him to use the minimum of colour.
We were very lucky to see many of his work in a very important collection. It was a revelation and an eye opener. We were very lucky to acquire a good piece of the artist in later years.
We love the work,
Peter Constant
