THE STRUGGLES AGAINST SLAVERY NEVER CEASE!
Euterpe Ionides, signed, oil on canvas, painted circa 1860
The lady of Constantinople fought heart and soul for Freedom in her city, the city of the tyrans, The Sultans and their henchmen who roamed the Ottoman Empire stealing women and children, enslaving them and selling them in the Slave bazaars of Constantinople or turning them into vicious genissaries.
Euterpe Ionides knew the practice, saw it happening in her city and when liberated and in London, she made it her duty, her struggle to fight for abolition of slavery and bazaars for slaves. This is what this painting of hers is and was all about. The struggle to FREEDOM of all humanity, not just the Greeks of the city and the empire of the Ottomans!
