FRENCH ART ON THE SLIDE BUT WHY?

ART IS A STOCK MARKET OF BLUE CHIPS AND ……

POINTILLIST ART OF MENTION BUT IN DECLINE!!!

THE WORD OF ART IS A VERY DELICATE AREA OF INVESTMENT AND LOVE AFFAIR. YOU EITHER LOVE ART AND SPEND MILLIONS AND BILLIONS BUYING IT, THAT IS IF YOU HAVE IT, OR YOU SPEND A FEW HUNDRED POUNDS OR THOUSANDS IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT BECAUSE YOU LOVE ART AND YOU CAN SEE THE POTENTIAL IN IT.

THE IDEA OF INVESTING IN ART IS GREAT AND GREATER IT BECOMES WHEN WHATEVER YOU LIKE AESTHETICALLY MANY OTHERS DO TOO AND AT SOME POINT WHATEVER YOU INVESTED IN BECOMES A GOOD MONEY EARNER. THAT IS THE THEORY OF INVESTING IN ART BUT THE LOVE OF IT IS A DIFFERENT BALL GAME ALTOGETHER.

I HAVE WITNESSED ART GOING UP IN LEAPS AND BOUNDS AND THEN CRASHING TO SMITHERINS. I HAVE WITNESSED IT BOUNCING BACK LIKE STOCKS WITHIN DAYS, MONTHS OR A YEAR OR TWO. I LEARNED TO BE PATIENT AND SIT TIGHT WHEN THERE IS A LOT OF TURBULENCE AND ALSO WHEN WHEN I CAN EXPLOIT THE WAVES OF INVESTMENT AND GRAB OPPORTUNITIES. THEY ARE ALWAYS AROUND BUT ONE HAS TO BE VERY SELECTIVE AND AT TIMES LUCKY AND BEFORE OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME IDEAS ON WHO TO INVEST IN AND WHY.

THE PHENOMENON OF ART TRENDS BEING POPULAR AND OTHERS GOING IN REVERSE IS NOT NEW. SOME DECADES AGO IT WAS VICTORIAN ART. THEN IT BOUNCED BACK IN THE 1980s AND 1990s TO BE ABANDONED AGAIN BY SERIOUS INVESTORS. IT WAS SWEDISH ART, SPANISH ART, GREEK ART THAT CAME UNDER THE HAMMER OF DECLINE AND TODAY I CAN SEE THE SAME IN FRENCH ART BUT JUST AMONG THE SECOND AND THIRD CLASS ARTISTS OF FRANCE. THE TOP CREAM IS STILL TOP AND IT IS MOVED UPWARDS BY INTERNATIONAL INVESTORS AND THEIR BILLIONS.

LOOKING AT TODAY’S ART TRENDS IT MATTERS NOT WHO IS THE ARTIST. IMPRESSIONISTS IN DECLINE, DIVISIONIST ARTISTS NOT RECOGNISED. POINTILLISM SUFFERING, FAUVISM LOSING GROUND, CUBISM STRUGGLING TO KEEP ITS SHARE OF THE MARKET. THESE ARE THE ART TRENDS AND STYLES THAT GO BACK 100-150 YEARS FROM TODAY.

I AM STOPPING AT THE EVENTS OF NOW AND HOW THE FRENCH MARKET IS UNDER THE HAMMER NOT OF AUCTIONEERS JUST BUT OF AN ECONOMIC DECLINE IN FRANCE. I HAVE A FEW PIECES OF FRENCH ART THAT FOR OVER THIRTY YEARS ARE STAGNANT AND DECLINING. I AM WONDERING WHEN IT WILL BE PRUDENT TO GET THEM CIRCULATING AND I CANNOT SEE THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL. WHEN POINTILLISM AS IN THE WORK ABOVE IS SELLING TODAY AT 2000-3000 POUNDS, I AM WONDERING WHY ONE SHOULD NOT BUY SUCH ART FOR THE FUTURE. WILL THERE BE A FUTURE IN THE NEXT TEN YEARS OR WILL IT HAVE TO BE ANOTHER 20-30 YEARS?

I AM AN OPTIMIST BY NATURE BUT A LONG DECLINE IN PRICES DOES NOT SUPPORT OPTIMISM. TOO MANY ARTISTS, TOO MANY PIECES OF ART AND MONEY FOR THIS THIRD CATEGORY OF ARTISTS IS NOT AROUND. YET, I ALWAYS MAINTAINED THAT THIS IS THE RIGHT TIME TO INVEST. I AM ON THE SIDELINES AND I AM THINKING ONCE AGAIN.

INVEST OR HOLD ON TO CASH?
