GREEK ART REVIVED AND FLOURISHING IN ATHENS AUCTIONS OF VERGOS
Parthenis Apotheosis
Vergos Auctions have been doing a sterling job for Greek art in Athens like Bonhmas in London. Their recent sale in Athens, 27th January 2021, was very successful with a magnificent painting by Parthenis selling for 370,000 euros and topping by far the auction sale. Among the rest of the sale we select to mention the works of Spyropoulos, the best of which sold for 75,000 euros.
Spyropoulos, Abstract
From Giallinas to Scarvelli, from Papaloukas and Parthenis, to Spyropoulos and Fassianos the sale was a big success with plenty to encourage old and new investors and invite them in the market place.
I had the pleasure to see the Parthenis masterpiece in its home back in the early 1990s. Indeed a magnificent painting and one of the biggest Parthenis I have even seen. I am a little surprised that the owners decided to sell the diamond of their collection and also surprised that the work did not sell for more. “The Apotheosis of Beauty” was indeed a beauty of painting by the Greek master of Alexandria Constantine Parthenis.
